It's just a matter of time, say stadium supporters

BRISTOL City supporters believe the club should not back out of plans to build a new stadium at Ashton Vale, despite the latest legal setback.

Robins fans say the club should continue to pursue its plans for a new 30,000-seater ground after a High Court judge ruled that anti-stadium campaigners could carry on their fight to have the stadium site protected from development.

The decision on Monday by Mr Justice Underhill, in favour of campaigners hoping to have the stadium site registered as a town green, means the club has no chance of building its £92 million ground in time for the 2014/15 season.

But Miles Hendy, Bristol City Supporters' Trust vice chairman, said the club should not give in to the campaigners.

He said: "In life, you shouldn't give way to people who are acting in a manner which is tantamount to cheating to get their own way. If we, as a society, want to make progress we shouldn't let small-minded individuals use the law in an inappropriate manner.

"The news that the judge ruled in the campaigners' favour didn't surprise me – sometimes you have to put a lot of time and effort in to get the things you want.

"It's a great shame these people are acting in this way but good on Steve Lansdown (one of the landowners and majority club shareholder) for sticking with it and fighting for what he believes is the right thing for his vision. And his vision will have significant benefits for the football club and local economy."

Mark Tovey, a member of the supporters' trust board, believes the stadium will be built once the legal process has run its course.

He said: "We will get a stadium eventually so we shouldn't pull out now. The campaigners have used the law to exercise their rights.

"The stadium will bring hundreds of jobs and prosperity to the area in a time of austerity. Steve Lansdown has put his cash and soul into it and has found a lot of favour – it's just a matter of time."
