Vote over mayor is crucial to our future

THE open-air debate about an elected mayor for Bristol literally brought the issue onto the streets and to the people. And that is where it needs to be. And interestingly it was the people listening who decided how long they would give each speaker. It was a traditional hustings where the speaker's personality was crucial.

Hopefully this will give impetus to the debate about an elected mayor. For Bristolians will be asked to vote on this in less than three weeks' time.

It is the most significant vote for generations. More important than a general election and absolutely crucial to the future of Bristol.

We know that cities which opt for an elected mayor are more likely to attract Government funding for a wide range of projects.

And as a paper we believe the city will benefit hugely from having an elected mayor.

That's because we know the alternative. It is cabinet and committee government and we have had it for years and it has frankly left a lot to be desired.

We need an elected mayor with ambition, drive, charisma, flair, passion and pride in this city who is able to think and act independently with Bristol's best interests in mind and not someone who is shackled by political doctrine and who wastes time and efforts scoring cheap political points.
