Mum's the word for talented young lyricists

CHILDREN from Southville Primary School recorded their own song for Mothering Sunday, with lyrics about what their mums mean to them.

With the South Bristol Music Centre Community Orchestra, the children performed a concert on Saturday night which was recorded for a CD to be produced in time for Mothering Sunday this weekend.

South Bristol Music Centre Director Jonathan Palmer said: "Last December I watched the programme in which the Military Wives were asked to write some lyrics that expressed their feelings about their husbands being overseas in Afghanistan. Their words were eventually used to produce the basis for a song – one that became very popular indeed. I immediately wondered if children could do a similar thing?"

Aged five to eleven, the children have both helped to produce the lyrics for "Mum, you're number one" and to design the CD cover.

Southville Primary School Head teacher Sandie Smith said: "Music is an important part of school life at Southville Primary and we welcome additional opportunities to extend our children's musical enjoyment, knowledge and achievement in making music with others. Everyone was easily inspired by a very special person – their mums."
